How does the buttcap come off of this tennis racquet?
I have a Head Titanium 3100 and there's some rattling inside which I've read is fairly common from time to time with little flakes of material coming off on the inside and you just need to take off the buttcap of the racquet and it will all come out.
But it seems that if I want to take off the bottom on this racquet I would have to remove the entire grip because it's buried under it? Is the grip material sticky itself or can it just be taken off then wrapped around tightly and taped at the top? I don't want to have to take it off then buy a whole new grip just because of this. But the rattling sound is very annoying when playing.
Is there an easier solution?
There are a number of ways to remove a butt cap depending on the type of racquet. Some are real easy to snap off, others you have to take a small screw drive to pry open, or if you unfortunately have a Head racquet or a few other models you might have to remove your entire grip to slide it off. After you get the butt cap off shake, shake and shake some more until that graphite comes falling out the opening. You sometimes won’t be able to see it come out so just do it until you get rid of the rattling in the frame. Then put the butt cap back on and you’re ready to play again.
Replacing a Grip
Overgrips will go on right over the existing and are very easy to put on. Simply start at the bottom, pulling the grip firm, and then twist it around the handle until you make your way to the top. When you run out of grip, use the tape included in the package to secure the top of the grip to the handle.
Replacement grips can be a tad bit trickier, but it’s essentially the same concept. First take off the existing grip and remove the staple. With the tennis racquet upside-down, unroll a reasonable amount to start with and remove the tape backing. Then take the tapered end of the tape and attach it the butt cap. You may want to staple it there, but it’s not necessary.
If you are right-handed tennis player pull the tape to the right with the racquet head down. Go left if you are left-handed. Make sure to pull the grip taught and wrap it slowly around the handling, overlapping slightly on the previous layer. Once you reach the top of your handle, you will need to trim the grip with scissors. Draw a straight line across the grip where you want the top to be. Then unravel slightly and cut the grip along the line. Then wrap the grip back up and secure the top with the rubber collar. Congrats, you’ve got a comfy new grip!
